Vicky Reithinger

Bio:

Vicky Reithinger started to work with fiber arts when she was 5 years old. She learned how to knit and never stopped knitting. She started to knit simple pieces but now she designs her own patterns and lets the wool speak to her for her pieces. Later on she learned how to spin wool and any kind of fiber. She enjoys the different types of fibers, which could be Merino wool, Alpaca, Silk, Angora, Mohair and also Banana fiber. For her, it is a fascinating process from shearing to washing the fleece, carding, spinning and then knitting. She also enjoys to use commercial fibers to knit with. Vicky loves colors and her pieces show this. Vicky is an educator who enjoys teaching fiber art to any person, who would like to learn.

Handmade Crafter’s statement:

My inspiration starts with the animals and the natural or dyed colors of certain fibers. When I knit with silk fibers, I am in awe of the material. I raised silkworms myself, and harvested the silk, therefore I know how much work it is to grow that type of fiber. I am also aware of the lives of the animals who give us fiber. My daughter raises Angora bunnies, this fiber is so lightweight and it develops a beautiful halo. It is fascinating for me to look into our human history and recognize the need of clothing. We can buy pieces of clothing very cheap and we've lost the connection to the making of that garment. It is important for me to educate people with my pieces, how much time, effort and creativity goes into garments like this. A garment can hug you and dress you in a very special way.
